Summary Reigning world champion Sebastien Loeb retired during the third stage of the Rally France.

Sebastien Loeb retirement from the rally gave his rivals a chance to cut his lead in the overall standings.Daniel Sordo of Spain won the eighth stage to be a second ahead of Petter Solberg of Norway after the opening day.Sebastien Ogier of France was in third place, 2.8 seconds behind Sordo, and could cut Loebs overall lead to one point if he wins the rally and Sundays power stage.Loeb was leading after two stages but then ran into oil pressure problems. The seven-time world champion will not restart on Saturday.Mikko Hirvonen of Finland could overtake Loeb in the overall standings but was in sixth place, 1 minute, 20.6 seconds off the pace.
