Summary American swimmer won gold medal in 200 meter event of World Swimming Championship.
Michael Phelps won his first gold medal of the world swimming championships, taking the 200-meter butterfly in a tight race with Japans Takeshi Matsuda.Phelps led after 100 meters Wednesday, but briefly relinquished the lead to Matsuda with 50 meters to go. Matsuda won the silver in 1:54.01, and Wu Peng of China earned the bronze in 1:54.67.
