(Dunya News) – In a first for the women in Lahore, a dedicated weight and powerlifting club has been inaugurated in Punjab University where young women weight lifters will now be able to train for international events.

Women trainers said the setting up of the facility was an encouraging step which would allow them to focus on honing their skills.
“Earlier we used to do combined training with boys. So we had limited time available,” said one of the women weightlifters. “Now here we have much more time for training.”

So far only 12 women are training in this one-room club.
According to the club’s coach, Rashid Malik, the one-room training club would allow more women athletes to come forth and be able to train themselves. He said the dedicated training space would allow them to train better for the next SAF Games.
Through this club, women weightlifters have said their unique identity – apart from their male colleagues – has been acknowledged.
