Karachi: Schoolgirls challenge stereotypes through football match

(Dunya News) – In Karachi’s impoverished area Ibrahim Hyderi, a girls’ school has defied all norms by hosting a football match for the first time as an extracurricular activity, something that has allowed young girls to smash stereotypes.

Getting an opportunity to play in front of their schoolmates, the girls shined and celebrated upon scoring goals. Girls at the school in Ibrahim Hyderi have for long been deprived of extracurricular activities. But for these young girls playing football means challenging the system.

Dressed in shalwar kameez and colourful tops, the teams played with zeal and determination against their opponents.

Speaking to Dunya News, participants said that this opportunity has opened new doors for them. Some players said girls deserve safe spaces where they can have a chance to play and be able to enhance their talents.

According to the girls, there were many gifted players in Ibrahim Hyderi and for them to be given a chance; there was a need to improve on extracurricular activities in schools for girls.
