SYDNEY, Dec 6, 2012 (AFP) - Three-time Olympic gold medallist Drew Ginn has been appointed as one of two head coaches of Australian rowing in a shake-up ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Rowing Australia said on Thursday.

The position was set up in a general restructuring of Rowing Australia's high performance programme after this year's London Games and the announcement of Chris O'Brien as high performance director in August.

It is one of two new national head coach positions, with the second appointment to follow.

In his role Ginn will be responsible for national training and will provide technical leadership in all Australian performance rowing programmes.

Ginn, who won a silver medal in the men's four at this year's Olympics, has been a member of Australia's national rowing teams since 1994.

He won his first Olympic Games title at Atlanta in 1996 as part of the "Oarsome Foursome" and went on to win five world championships in addition to his three Olympic golds and one Olympic silver.

Australia finished ninth in the rowing medals table at the London Games, with three silver medals and two bronze.
