The groom named Riaz married to Mukhtar Chandi’s daughter by choice and news of love marriage infuriated their relatives and elders in the village.Today, the tribal leaders held a Jirga and announced murder of the couple.Jirga is a tribal assembly of elders which takes decisions by consensus, particularly in parts of Pakistans remote and feudal agricultural belts.Statistically, honor killings have a high level of support in rural society, despite widespread condemnation from human rights groups.In 2002 alone over 382 people, about 245 women and 137 men, became victims of honor killings in the Sindh province.Over the course of six years, more than 4,000 women have died as victims of honor killings in Pakistan from 1999 to 2004.
