Summary Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi defended emergency measures as constitutional, urging experts to identify any violations and stressing political cooperation against terrorism.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said the government has taken no action outside the Constitution, adding that the imposition of governor’s rule and an emergency was also carried out within the constitutional framework.
Speaking during a Senate session, Naqvi said constitutional experts should identify any provision allegedly violated by the government and specify the relevant article if they believed any constitutional breach had occurred.
Referring to a speech by Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Naqvi said the senator had delivered an emotional address. He added that discussions on terrorism had been taking place in Parliament since its first day, with various political leaders consulted on the issue.
The interior minister said former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser had assured the government that Pakistan would be supported in its fight against terrorism.
Naqvi said Qaiser had been asked to cooperate in counterterrorism efforts, but the position of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government differed from his stated assurance.
He added that the government had not wanted the situation to reach its current stage. Naqvi reiterated that the government’s measures were taken in accordance with the Constitution and stressed the need for political cooperation to combat terrorism.
