Summary Sindh approves 500 electric buses under PPP model to expand transport network, targeting underserved areas in Karachi and other cities while addressing mobility and environmental concerns.

KARACHI ( Dunya News) - The government of Sindh has approved the procurement of 500 new electric (EV) buses under a public-private partnership to improve public transport across the province, with a focus on underserved urban and regional routes.

The announcement was made during a session of the Sindh Assembly, where lawmakers highlighted persistent transport shortages in several areas. MQM-P lawmaker Naseer Ahmed pointed out that Manghopir still lacks adequate public transport, urging authorities to introduce bus services in the locality.

Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that the government plans to launch bus services in Orangi, Banaras and other densely populated areas. He added that new routes are also being introduced across the province, including in Tando Allahyar, Khairpur and Rohri, while a fresh route has already been initiated from Gulshan-e-Maymar in Karachi.

Memon stated that the expansion aims to strengthen the province-wide transport network and address long-standing mobility issues. He noted that the government is actively working on proposals and feedback provided by elected representatives.

During the session, MQM-P member Muaz Mehmood also raised concerns over the widespread availability of gutka and mawa, alleging police complicity in illegal sales. Sindh Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar responded by assuring the assembly that efforts are underway to curb the menace.
