Summary Warns of nationwide agitation and possible strike if government policies remain unchanged
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has announced the launch of a protest movement against rising inflation and fuel prices, warning of nationwide demonstrations if the government does not revise its policies.
Addressing a large gathering at Aabpara Chowk in Islamabad, the chief of Jamaat-e-Islami said the movement had formally begun and could escalate into countrywide protests.
The demonstration, organised in response to increasing petrol prices and cost of living, drew a significant number of participants who chanted slogans against the government and demanded immediate relief.
Hafiz Naeem said the turnout disproved claims that the public would not mobilise over rising electricity and fuel costs, adding that the protest marked the beginning of a broader campaign.
He criticised government policies, alleging that economic decisions were placing undue burden on ordinary citizens, and warned that failure to change course would push more people onto the streets.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader claimed that a substantial portion of petrol prices consisted of levies and taxes, questioning the government’s fiscal approach and accusing authorities of prioritising external financial commitments over public welfare.
He also raised concerns about payments to independent power producers, alleging that large sums had been directed towards what he described as entrenched interests.
Hafiz Naeem announced that a nationwide strike could be called soon, warning of a complete shutter-down across markets if demands are not met. He said public frustration was growing and could become difficult to contain if economic pressures persist.
The protest comes amid broader concerns over inflation and economic challenges, with opposition groups increasingly stepping up criticism of the government’s financial policies.
