Summary NDMA warns of nationwide thunderstorms, strong winds and possible hailstorms within 24 hours, with risks of flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage in vulnerable areas.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert forecasting thunderstorms, gusty winds and possible hailstorms in many parts of the country over the next 12 to 24 hours.
According to the authority, the current weather pattern is consistent with earlier advisories issued by the National Emergencies Operation Centre. The alert comes as authorities continue to review preparedness ahead of the monsoon season on the directives of the prime minister.
Widespread rain accompanied by strong winds and thunder is expected in several regions, with isolated incidents of hailstorms likely.
In Punjab, cities including Murree, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Lahore, Faisalabad and Sargodha are likely to receive rainfall, with occasional hailstorms in some areas.
Northern regions such as Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza and surrounding areas, along with parts of Azad Kashmir including Muzaffarabad and Neelum Valley, are also expected to experience thunderstorms.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts including Swat, Abbottabad, Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan may witness rain and gusty winds, with chances of hail at isolated locations.
In Sindh, Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin and nearby areas are forecast to receive thunderstorms and rain, while parts of Balochistan including Quetta, Zhob, Khuzdar and Gwadar are also expected to be affected.
Authorities have warned that rising temperatures in northern areas could accelerate glacier melt, increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, flash flooding and landslides.
Citizens have been advised to avoid visiting areas near glacial lakes and refrain from staying on vulnerable slopes. In southern regions, strong winds and potential hailstorms may damage weak structures, solar panels and vehicles.
Travellers have also been cautioned about possible disruptions in hilly areas due to adverse weather conditions.
