Summary The government and the opposition have reached a consensus on the 20th Amendment.
The deadlock ended in the fourth round of talks held on Wednesday.Sources said the government has agreed to the opposition’s demand about an independent caretaker set-up to be formed after broad consultations. The opposition would be fully consulted on the formation of the caretaker set-up.Muslim League-Likeminded President Saleem Saifullah confirmed that breakthrough has been reached on the issue of the 20th Amendment. He said that the government has also agreed to include the opposition’s suggestions in the draft of the 20th Amend.Similarly, PPP leader Khursheed Shah said there is no deadlock between the government and the opposition on the 20th Amend. He said progress has been made in talks on the issue, while things would be fully finalised in a day or so. He said that the suggestions being floated in the talks would be presented before the leadership on both sides. He said it is the leadership’s prerogative then to fully accept or seek some further fine-tuning. He said PM Gilani would be informed of the progress as soon as he returns from the Qatar visit.PML-N leader and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Ch Nisar said a final deal has so far not been made. He said his party has only ended the deadlock at this stage, while things need to be finalized yet.
