Summary Bushra Bibi, wife of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, has been shifted back to Adiala Jail after undergoing eye surgery in Rawalpindi.

RAWALPINDI – Bushra Bibi, the wife of incarcerated former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, was shifted back to Adiala Jail on Friday following an eye surgery performed at a private hospital in Rawalpindi.

According to jail authorities, she had been discharged after one night’s stay in hospital and returned to custody after post-operative procedures were completed. The development comes amid heightened political attention and ongoing concerns raised by her party regarding her medical condition and treatment in detention.

The jail administration stated that Bushra Bibi had complained of impaired vision in her right eye, prompting immediate medical examination by ophthalmologists. Following detailed assessment, doctors diagnosed retinal detachment in the right eye, which required surgical intervention. She was then transferred to a private medical facility on Thursday evening, where pre-operative tests and examinations were conducted before the procedure.

According to the superintendent of Adiala Jail, medical experts confirmed retinal detachment, a condition that can significantly affect vision if not treated promptly. On medical advice, surgery was recommended and subsequently carried out.

The operation was performed by Professor Dr Nadeem Qureshi along with a panel of specialists. Officials confirmed that Bushra Bibi gave consent for the procedure before it was conducted. After the surgery, she remained under observation for a night in the hospital before being discharged.

The jail authorities further said that post-operative examinations had been completed and follow-up treatment would continue as per doctors’ instructions while she remains in custody at Adiala Jail.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has repeatedly expressed concern over Bushra Bibi’s health condition, calling for timely diagnosis and adequate medical care. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan stated on social media platform X that he had been informed of her hospital transfer and expected further updates on her treatment.

He also emphasised that both Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan should be allowed access to their family members and, where necessary, moved for medical treatment. He described such access as a “basic right according to law” and added that their health conditions were a matter of serious concern for the public.

Earlier reports circulating on social media referred to a medical document dated March 28, suggesting that she had experienced blurred vision and a black spot in her right eye for several days, along with headaches and flashes. The authenticity of this document has not been independently verified.

Separately, PTI statements also claimed that she had been diagnosed with posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), along with myopia and astigmatism, describing the situation as “deeply concerning”.

Following her return to custody, Bushra Bibi received a visit from her daughters and sister at Adiala Jail. The meeting reportedly lasted more than an hour and was held under special arrangements.

The visit came shortly after confirmation of her eye surgery, with family members also reaching Islamabad in connection with her treatment and care. Maryam Riaz Wattoo, her sister, had earlier stated on social media that Bushra Bibi was undergoing a “crucial surgery” and requested prayers, without disclosing further medical details.

Bushra Bibi is currently serving a seven-year sentence in the £190 million corruption case, alongside a separate 17-year sentence in the Toshakhana 2 case, which relates to the purchase of a jewellery set gifted during a 2021 official visit by the Saudi crown prince.

Concerns regarding her detention conditions have also been raised internationally. In December last year, a United Nations expert warned that she was being detained in circumstances that could pose a serious risk to her physical and mental integrity. The same rapporteur also raised concerns over Imran Khan’s detention conditions, urging Pakistani authorities to ensure compliance with international standards on prisoner treatment.

Earlier reports also indicated that Imran Khan himself had undergone an eye procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, highlighting ongoing medical issues within the family while in custody.
