'No Swiss letter to be written, Govt to hold early polls'

Summary PPP Core Committee has decided not to write a letter to Swiss authorities.

However, the Committee decided that Senate and general elections could be called early. Supreme Court has given the government one-week deadline to implement the NRO verdict, and write a letter to the Swiss authorities regarding the bank accounts of PPP leader and President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari.However, the PPP Core Committee, led by Prime Minister Gilani, on Thursday decided that it would not write a letter to the Swiss authorities since the President enjoys immunity under the Constitution. The Core Committee met at the Presidency.The Core Committee noted that since the President enjoys the constitutional immunity, no one needs to seek any explanation on the issue.The recent contempt of court notices issued to PPP leaders, notably Babar Awan, were also discussed in the meeting.Notable among the participants were Khursheed Shah, Rehman Malik, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Naveed Qamar and Nazar Muhammad Gondal.Khursheed Shah, who attended the PPP Core Committee meeting, said the government would hold Senate elections in February instead of March. He said general elections could be held soon after the Senate polls.
