Summary MPs joining the PTI have announced resignation, yet the ECP has not received their resignations.
The members switching parties have to submit resignations to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as per the law. According to the Constitution, if any MNA or member of the Senate changes party, s/he becomes ineligible.Till now MNA Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Engineer Amir Muqam, Khwaja Muhammad Khan Hoti, Jahangir Tarin, Owais Laghari, Makhdum Javed Hashmi and Azam Hoti from Senate have resigned. Some provincial members also include this list. The resignations of Sardar Asif Ahmad Ali and Memona Hashmi are yet to be submitted. It is astonishing that all the resignations of politicians are lying in their related assemblies and none of them could submit them to the Election Commission except Sherry Rehman who has been nominated as Pakistani Ambassador to the US.Sherry has been replaced by PPP’s Surayya Jatoi as a successful candidate.According to the ECP, resignation of any member is sent by the Speaker of the related assembly to the Election Commission who is bound to arrange for by-elections within 60 days while declaring the seat vacant. And the Speaker is not entitled to sit on the resignation for long.Analysts are of the view that Sherri Rehman’s resignation was on nonpolitical basis that is why it was accepted without any delay. But the submission of PTI-ed MPs’ resignations have been delayed due to political reasons.
