The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry continues hearing of Rental Power Policy case today.In his remarks the CJ said that Pakistan faces 67 billion dollars foreign debt which is increasing day by day while the masses are raising the questions how the agreements were made without advertisement.He said that the Supreme Court always took the decision in the public interest. The Chief Justice asked who instead of the democratic government will solve the problems as it has mandate to address the public issues.Justice Khilji Arif Hussain questioned why oil was not being purchased for the power plants? He said the people had turned to streets regarding their problems.Counsel for Reshma Power Plant Hafeez Peerzada told the court that plant that the government does not have money to purchase oil for the plant while only 5 power plants were operational. He said the government approved 19 plants but there was no possibility of initiation of work on 50 percent projects.Hafeez said that the government was responsible to defend basic rights which were being exploited in the country. He said the rulers have not learnt any lesson from history.Meanwhile, PEPCO’s lawyer told the court that recovery of electricity charges from Khyber-Pakhtukhwa and Balochistan was not possible.Justice Khilji Arif asked why the power theft was not ended as the factories were also stealing electricity.
