Summary General Pervez Musharraf sent packing the Nawaz government on the fateful day of Oct 12, 1999.

On the same day General Pervez Musharraf was present in Sri Lanka on the 50th anniversary of the army. There, he got the news that he was being replaced by the then DG ISI General Ziauddin Butt as army chief. He immediately took a flight from Colombo to Karachi. It was alleged Nawaz Sharif did not let the plane land despite no additional fuel in the aircraft.The PIA flight remained in the air for quite a while. Pakistan army, on the orders of General Usmani, took the control of Karachi Airport, made the landing of the plane possible. The discussion afterwards raged on as to who ordered to stop the plane from landing.PML-N terms it the black day as their government was wrapped up on that day. After putting Nawaz Sharif under house arrest, General Musharraf imposed emergency in the country and suspended the constitution.
