Gas thieves to face 15-year jail; draft bill okayed

Summary National Assembly Standing Committee for Petroleum has approved draft (amendment) bill on gas theft.

According to the approved draft, the sentence for gas theft has been raised from 10 years to 14 years. Anyone caught meddling with the main and distribution lines of gas will face 5 to 10 years in jail along with Rs 3 million fine.The domestic consumers caught fiddling with the meter for favoured readings will face 6 months in jail and Rs 100,000 fine, while industrial consumers will face 5 years and half a million rupees fine. The maximum penalty for blowing up gas pipelines with explosives will be 16 years in jail and up to Rs 10 million fine.
