Summary The Punjab Cabinet in its meeting has approved more reduction in the powers of Governor.
The Punjab Cabinet has approved reduction in the powers of Governor under which his two per cent quota in government housing schemes will end. The chief minister will get this quota now.The cabinet endorsed the amendment in Land Development Regulation Act, 1998 and slashed Governor’s two per cent quota of allotment of plots in government housing schemes. After the decision of the Punjab Cabinet, the governor will not be able to allot a plot to any person. The summary of the amendment was sent to the chief minister by secretary housing. After the approval by the chief minister the summary was presented before the cabinet.Earlier, Secretary Housing and Physical Planning had sent a summary of allotment of plots to two widows of police officials who were martyred during their duty to the chief minister secretariat from where it was to be sent to Governor for approval. But the chief minister raised objection that this authority should not lie with the governor. This power was granted to governor during military rule, however, after the Eighteenth Amendment this power should be granted to the chief executive. Before the decision of the Punjab government, Governor Punjab was authorised to allot five or ten marla plots to government servants who die during duty.
