PM acknowledges judiciarys power to interpret law

Summary PM Gilani has once again ruled out possibility of a tussle between the judiciary and the executive.

Addressing the National Assembly session, PM Yousuf Raza Gilani appreciated the recent interpretation by the Supreme Court of the executive’s power to appoint officers. He said the parliament respects the court’s interpretation and would uphold all verdicts of the court.The PM said in the light of the court’s interpretation, Sohail Ahmed, who was earlier made OSD, has been appointed Secretary Narcotics. He said the judiciary got independence after much struggle, and those who dream of a sudden change (of government) would be disappointed. He said such elements need to acknowledge that “we are the government and they are the opposition”.Yousuf Raza Gilani said the government employees are arms of the government and would always be looked after. He said those trying to incite the bureaucracy must have understood now that it is not possible. He said all such people should read the Quaid’s address to the bureaucrats in which “they were asked to facilitate the government of the day, and not individuals”.The PM said those seeking shortcuts would have to try their luck at the next elections and “that’s the only way”. The government, the parliament should complete its term, he added. “I never said the PM should complete its tenure. I always said the parliament should complete its tenure.”
