Summary The PPP, the MQM and the ANP decided to get united against violence in Karachi.
Sindh Police Additional IG Saud Mirza called a meeting in which the representatives of the three parties, East Zone DIG and SPs participated.The meeting held a detailed discussion on the prevailing situation in the city with a particular reference to the recent spree of killings.The participants stressed the need for forging unity and developing consensus at grassroots level so that efforts for restoring peace in the city could prove successful.They agreed that there was a dire need to restore peace in the city for the promotion of democracy and continuation of the reconciliation process in the country.The leaders of the three parties pledged to create a conducive atmosphere so that peace could be restored in the city on a permanent basis.PPP’s Karachi President Najmi Aalam said that nobody would be allowed to disrupt Karachi’s peace.ANP leader Bashir Jan said that the inter parties meeting would be held weekly to maintain peace. Talking to the media, the additional IG said that the unity among the three parties would improve law and order situation in the country.Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik called on Governor Ebad and discussed with him the prevailing law and order situation in the metropolis.He assured the governor of all-out cooperation by the federal government in restoring peace in Karachi.The PPP side was represented by Waqar Mehdi, Najmi Alam and Rashid Rabbani, while Dr Sagheer Ahmed and others represented the Muttahida. The ANP was represented by Riaz Gul and Rana Gul.It was decided at the meeting to compensate people who incurred losses in Malir, Landhi and Khokhrapar due to terrorist activities. It was also decided that the Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation would try to compensate the affected people.
