Summary Manchar Lake seeps into nearby areas prompting migration
DADU (Dunya News) – Amid the torrential rains all across Sindh, Manchar Lake in Dadu district has filled up to the point of overflowing. The lake’s water has started leaking from Danister after it was breached. Panic resulting from the overflow prompted people from nearby villages to migrate to safer areas.
The level of Sem canal in Nokot area of Mirpurkhas district has risen to a dangerous level posing a serious threat to Nokot city. Anticipating possible flooding, sandbags have been placed on the embankments to block the inflow of water.
The Danister Wah canal, adjacent to Manchar Lake, broke due to increased water pressure at point RD-62, after which it started leaking and put Bobak city and Sehwan airport in danger of flooding.
Residents of the area say that hundreds of villages as well as Union Council Bobak, Jaffarabad, Wahar and the oil refinery are prone to flooding.
Deputy Commissioner Jamshoro Farid Mustafa said that repair work of Danister canal’s broken barrier is underway.
According to the Manchar Control Room, the level of Lake Manchar rose by 6 feet after the inflow of water from mountain streams. The maximum water level in the lake is up to 120 feet while the current water level is 116.08 feet.
