A cable sent to Washington by the then US ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W Patterson, from Islamabad on February 25, 2010 pictured the situation emerged after the resignation of Shaukat Tareen.According to the cable, Health Minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin and Nasim Beg were strong candidates for the vacant post but a breach occurred between Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari over the appointment of a new finance minister. The cable reported that the president was in favour of Nasim Beg while the prime minster was inclined towards Shahabuddin. The cable said that prime minister’s advisor Dr Hafeez Pahsa was even a stronger candidate for the post because of his acceptability for international monetary organisations.
