Summary Pakistan Railways former officers say that Chinese engines were deliberately impaired.
An inquiry committee constituted by the National Assembly standing committee revealed in its report that some 200 engines were impaired by the use of substandard lubricant and overlooking the wear and tear.According to the report, delinquency of the Railways authorities caused the loss of billions of rupees to Railways.Railway’s former officers said that the Chinese engines were deliberately impaired to ensure the import of the US engines.The report says that the air filters and fuel filters of the engines were not changed for two years and used lubricant was injected in the engines last year when the oil supply to the Railways was ceased.Crankshafts of 17 engines broke due to the use of substandard lubricant. The price of one crankshaft is $74,000 and total of repairing all engines is estimated around Rs 6.30 billion, the report said. The Railways have borne a loss of Rs 21 billion in a year due to the non functionality of 200 engines.
