ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Senate Standing Committee recommended Monday not to collect registration fees from users who bring a mobile phone from abroad.

According to details, the Senate Standing Committee has opposed the mobile registration fee, while the Ministry of Information Technology is also in favor of abolishing the registration fee, but FBR officials are of the view that mobile phone imports have increased due to registration.

Senator Rehman Malik, in the Information Technology Committee, said that students should be allowed to bring at least one mobile phone from abroad. “The duty of four million people will be paid if customs officials seize even just one smuggling container”, he added.

Customs officials stated the mobile fee has been reduced for commercial import and personal use. In 2018, the import of 10 million mobile phones resulted in tax of Rs28.50 billion, while in the first four months of this fiscal year, the import of 6.7 million mobile phones has received tax of R15 billion.

The committee was told that mobile phone imports have increased to 49% this year. Mobile phone imports totaled $387.7 million from July to October. Imports during the same period last year were $26 million.
