Dozens of machines detected faulty in govt hospitals of Punjab

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Dozens of machines have been found inoperative in twenty-one government hospitals in Punjab, while hundreds of doctors’ posts have been found vacant in six teaching hospitals.

Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid said that the machines are being replaced and refurbished while the recruitment of doctors is in progress.

According to Dunya News report, out of the 20 MRI, three have been found malfunctioned in 21 public hospitals in Punjab. 64 out of 1042 ventilators have been detected inactive. 17 ultrasound machines out of a total of 364 machines have expired. Three out of the 14 lithotripsy machines don’t function. 11 out of 636 dialysis machines have been damaged. Similarly, 14 of the 333 incubators have become inactive.

According to sources, post of 190 doctors in Mayo Hospital and 140 doctors in General Hospital are vacant. The position of 90 doctors at Jinnah Hospital, 80 in Children’s Hospital, 70 in Services Hospital and 50 in Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) are yet to be filled.

Dr. Yasmin Rashid expressed that old and defective machines will be replaced and repaired at a cost of Rs10 billion. “As many as 14,000 new doctors have been recruited in hospitals, while more doctors and staff are being recruited,” she said, adding that hiring doctors and replacing outdated and inoperative machines will further improve hospitals.
