Summary SC directs govt to extend services of additional judges for one year in Lahore and Sindh high courts

Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday issued detailed verdict on petitions, seeking to review judges’ appointment case. The court in its judgement said that government stance in the review case was not correct and under Article 148 of the constitution any matter of public interest could be brought directly to the Supreme Court. Therefore, the federal government’s stance that it was deprived of a chance for appeal is not correct. It was also said in the verdict that the role of the parliamentary committee did not end with the Supreme Court verdict. The parliamentary committee had rejected the Judicial Commission’s request to grant one year extension in services to four Lahore High Court and two Sindh High Court judges. The decision of the parliamentary committee was challenged in the Supreme Court.
