Dysfunctional scanners expose poor security at Lahore Airport

Summary Installed scanners on the airport were non-functional for the past two years

(Web Desk) – The shooting at Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore has exposed grave negligence on part of the security of the high risk zone.

The breach of security and the dysfunctional security scanners have raised a question mark on the seriousness of Airport Security Force (ASF) and concerned quarters towards fulfilling their duty of providing the citizens and passengers flying in and out the country with security.

A firing incident at the airport lounge on Wednesday saw two people shot dead in the premises of the supposedly secure airport lounge, due to personal enmity as per the police sources.

One victim named Zain Jutt was sought to be associated with the killing of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Babar Butt’s murder and the other was a taxi driver. The shooters Arshad and Shan claimed to have committed the act on instructions of Babar Butt’s brother Qaiser Butt to seek revenge for his brother’s murder.

Initial investigation report sent to the Civil Aviation division reveals that the installed scanners on the airport were non-functional for the past two years. Repeated requests to repair or change the scanners fell on deaf years.

The faulty, inoperative scanners meant that the cars passing through the airport were not being checked and the life of the citizens was put on risk due to the carelessness and neglect of those responsible.

After the shooting incident law enforcement agencies have come into action and a high level committee has been formed to investigate how did the weapon reach the airport and who provided the arms responsible for the crime.

But the questions still remains on part of the criminal negligence of the authorities overseeing the security details.
