ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – International Labour Day — also known as May Day or International Workers’ Day — celebrates the struggle, dedication and commitment of the working class and is an annual public holiday in several countries.

The day aims to renew pledge to acknowledge and promote the dignity of labourers.

The theme of this year’s Labour Day is "Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement".

International Labour Day observed in the memory of massacre of labourers when the Chicago Police Department shot and killed ten unarmed demonstrators in Chicago, on May 30, 1937. The incident took place during the Little Steel strike in the United States.

Today, labour and traders organisations have chalked out special programmes to highlight the significance of the day.

Pakistan’s first labor policy was devised in 1972, in which May 1 was declared an official holiday.

This policy also formulated the creation of the Social Security Network, Old Age Benefit Schemes and Workers Welfare Fund.
