Summary Court appoints 10 senior lawyers to assist the court in the case
A 17-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, on Thursday accepted the Bhutto case reference for hearing and appointed 10 legal experts from across the country as amici curiae (friends of the court).Babar Awan presented five questions of law before the court. The questioned included if the Supreme Court and the Lahore High Court decisions in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s trial were in line with the basic rights enshrined in the constitution, if the sentence awarded to ZAB was in conformity with the constitution and the law and if the sentence could be justified in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence.The court appointed Aitzaz Ahsan, SM Zafar, Ali Ahmed Kurd, Justice (r) Tariq Mehmood, Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, Fakhurddin G Ibrahim, Khalid Anwar, Makhdoom Ali Khan, Barrister Zahoor and Latif Afridi as friends of the court and adjourned the hearing until May 2.
