Summary Ministry of Defence has asked for 523.66 billion rupees towards defence budget 2011-12.

According to sources, the defence ministry had asked for 582.50 billion rupees in its initial proposal.Sources said that in the final proposal the ministry asked for 200 billion rupees towards the salaries of the officers and soldiers of the armed forces, 127.66 billion rupees towards the progress and security of the atomic programme, the military farms and the TA/DA, 147.42 billion rupees for the production, import and custom charges of the military and defence equipment and 45.89 billion rupees for civil works.Sources also said that the pensions of the retired officers and soldiers would be paid from the civil budget, and the federal government would bear the expenses towards the military operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal areas.It is pertinent to mention here that the current defence budget was 442 billion rupees and it would be increased by 18.42 percent.
