(Dunya News) – The Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences in Muzaffarabad has a dialysis centre, built in 2006 by Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), which offers treatment free of cost. But with the passage of time, this centre is proving to be insufficient in regards to the needs of the patients.

In Azad Kashmir, patients suffering from various kidney diseases and those in need of dialysis are now faced with major problems due to insufficient number of dialysis machines.

According to medical experts, in Azad Kashmir, the number of kidney patients has increased over a period of a few years. In addition, the number of dialysis machines available in the centre cannot meet the needs of the increasing number of patients.

With limited resources and few dialysis machines, patients coming from different parts of the region have to wait for several days to receive dialysis treatment. Not just the patients but doctors and medical staff also find it difficult to cater to everyone with the necessary medical assistance.

Speaking to Dunya News, Dr. Muhammad Maroof, kidney specialist, said they have no extra resources available at the centre to provide dialysis to more patients.

“A few years back we had 50 to 100 dialysis a month. However, these numbers have increased to 700 to a thousand,” he said.

Patients said that there is a long waiting period and limited staff, which makes it hard for them to wait for their turn.

According to patients, doctors and medical staff, the dialysis centre is in need of more resources for which the government’s assistance is required.
