(Dunya News) – Clay pottery is one of the oldest and most ancient human inventions, and a major source of livelihood for people in Quetta.

In this fast-paced world, there are some people who still prefer using earthen pots especially household items during the summers.

In Quetta, potters make clay pottery from scratch. From kneading the dough made out of clay to ensuring the clay has enough air to be shaped into desirable sizes, pottery-makers produce a variety of items, including flower pots, ‘matkis’ or earthen pots, hukkas, vases, plates and other items.

With a natural ability to cool water, ‘matkis’ are favoured much over anything else.

Cheaper than other items, this ancient practice is passed on from one generation to the next.

With painstaking physical work, clay is shaped into a pot or ‘matki’ through a spinning wheel.

“I have learned this from my father and it has been more than 25 years since I have been working as a potter”, said Kumar.

Despite a few changes made in the designs of these pots, these earthen pots are still liked by many.
