Shehbaz moves ECP for inclusion of independent senators in party

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Punjab Chief Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday moved the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for formal inclusion of newly-elected independent Senators in the party.

The application was filed in the ECP on behalf of party’s president and Punjab CM by Senator Asif Kirmani.

The application pleaded the ECP to allow 17 newly-elected senators to join the ruling party because the law do not stop any independent senator to join any party, the application stated.

On March 29, the ECP had rejected pleas filed by independent senators aimed at joining ranks of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the upper house of the parliament.

Previously, the ruling PML-N had gained control of parliament’s upper house in a secret ballot on March 3, after its backed ‘independent candidates’ won 15 of the 52 seats up for grabs in the elections.

The independent senators backed by the ruling PML-N who won the Senate election inclde Ishaq Dar, Asif Kirmani, Haroon Akhtar, Sadia Abbasi, Nuzhat Sadiq, Kamran Michael, Hafiz Abdul Kareem, Maqbool Ahmed, Musadik Malik, Shaheen Khalid, Rana Mehmood-ul-Hassan, Dilawar Khan, and Pir Sabir Shah.
