President expresses disappointment over Awan's indictment

Summary President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed his disappointment over the indictment of Federal Law Minister Babar Awan in robbery and kidnapping cases, which were registered against him 12 years ago.

According to Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar, the president said that the indictment of the law minister was against the freedom of the judiciary and belied the norms of justice and fair play. He said that the cases were registered on political basis and the step was amounted to victimisation of political opponents. He maintained that Awan was pleading his (Zardari’s) cases in court. He urged the civil society and the bar associations to take notice of the issue.On Saturday, Rawalpindi Civil Judge Meher Sarfraz charged Babar Awan with robbery and abduction cases registered against him in 1998.
