(Dunya News) – A five-storey departmental store in Lahore’s Gulberg area was engulfed by fire early Tuesday morning.

But previous inspections by rescue teams indicate that the building’s fire safety measures were poor.

Black clouds and flames were witnessed on Tuesday at the site where once stood one of the most famous shopping centres of Gulberg area. Within minutes, the entire shopping department went into flames causing damages worth millions, reported Dunya News.

Rescue and fire brigade teams reached to the scene with dozens of vehicles trying to control the situation. According to the rescue team, the fire spread to all the compartments of the building due to the delay in making the rescue call.

The owners of the plaza claim the fire erupted due to a short circuit in the building.

After three hours of work by the rescue team, the fire was finally controlled. But the team couldn’t save much inside the building.

Before the fire incident, rescue team in a previous inspection had noted that the condition of the building to control fire related incidents inside the building was poor and unsatisfactory, reported Dunya News. Water hydrants inside the buildings were absent, and emergency exits were not according to the fire safety manual. Open wiring was seen everywhere in the shopping plaza.

According to sources, police is further investigating the cause that led to the fire.
