LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab chief minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif has said on Friday that his political opponents who criticised Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) project have taken a severe drubbing.

Statement of the chief minister has come in context of top court’s ruling today allowing the provincial government to continue construction of the project which was halted on order of Lahore High Court (LHC) on petition filed by opposition parties.

In a message posted on Twitter, Punjab CM congratulated the people for an alleged win over vested interests of certain politicians.

CM Shehbaz addressed a press conference in the provincial capital and said that the apex court backed the stance of the government of Punjab. He claimed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the leading opposition party in Punjab does not care for the common man otherwise it would not have hindered the project that belongs to the masses.

He alleged that PTI chief Imran Khan lies to the people of Pakistan and that the people would not pardon Khan for the 22-month long hurdles faced by them in transportation across the city owing to the halt.

Punjab CM asserted that the project would be completed within coming seven months.

Construction of metro train project being purported as the easiest mode of travel for commuters in Lahore was halted as opposition had filed petitions with the high court claiming violation of the law owing to heritage buildings in the way.

The project

In May 2014, Punjab government had signed a project with Chairman of the Chinese National Development Reforms Commission regarding construction of an Orange Line Train in Lahore so that the metropolis will depict a melange of the traditional and the modern.

The train route will be 27.1 kilometer long, spread from Ali Town to Thokar Niaz Baig, from Multan Road to Scheme Mor, Chowburji, MAO College, Mall Road, Laxmi Chowk and Railway Station, from Garhi Shahu Bridge to GT Road and UET and from Pakistan Mint to Dera Gojran.
