Summary Begum hails from Yasin Valley of District Ghizer in Gilgit-Baltistan

(Web Desk) – Salima Begum from Gilgit-Baltistan was among the ten finalists of Global Teacher Prize, an initiative that encourages teachers and has prize money of $1 million.

Global Teacher Prize ceremony was held on Sunday night in Dubai. A Canadian woman won the award for working towards the betterment of a school in a remote village in Arctic which only has air access.

The community that she is working to uplift has a high suicide rate and reportedly, the school does not have many teachers who wish to continue their career there.

Meanwhile, it should be noted here that a Pakistani woman teacher was also shortlisted for the honour. She was among the top ten finalists for the prize.

Begum hails from Yasin Valley of District Ghizer in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Besides teaching at the Elementary College for Women, she has trained over 8,000 teachers under an education reform programme and another 7,000 across the province.

The notable teacher has been recognized by a United States agency and is a published writer with many research articles.

Mahira Khan, one of the leading Pakistani entertainment names, who attended the ceremony in Dubai honoured Salima Begum in a message on social media.



There were 20,000 applications which were received from 179 countries across the globe for the prize.
