ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Interior Minister has admitted on Friday that National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) is faced with issues.

He addressed a press conference in the federal capital today.

Nisar said that retrieval of Pakistani identity cards from possession of terrorists damaged the country on different levels. He admitted that National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has issues however, the government is bringing reforms and introducing solutions with the passage of time.

He said that verification process of National Identity Cards (NIC) was branded ‘impossible’ by the naysayers however, the government has proved them wrong.

Nisar said that at least 2,23,512 fake cards were blocked in 2016 while after efforts spanning over a period of six months, the verification process met with success. While talking about efforts against extremist outfits, he revealed that former chief of Taliban, Mullah Akhtar Mansour’s ID card was issued in 2005.

He further said that around 0.45 million fake ID cards were blocked in the last three and a half years. He claimed that no action was taken against bogus ID cards before 2011. Nisar also said that over 32,000 passports were revoked in the past years.

The Interior Minister said that sims of mobile phones were verified as well.

Only 26 fake ID cards were cancelled in 2011, Nisar said.

Nisar revealed that Pakistani ID cards were used for human smuggling in the past years however, owing to effective policies of the government, the crime and issuance of objectionable cards have been curbed.

The federal minister asserted that fake cards and passports were not issued in the tenure of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) that began in 2013.
