RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Raheel Sharif on Wednesday has ordered ramping up targeted operation in Karachi to restore peace in the metropolis.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that the army chief visited Karachi Corps Headquarters and reviewed exercises of the Southern Command that are underway under the name ‘Pur-azm Jawab’.

The army chief was briefed over ongoing war drills in response to which he expressed satisfaction.

During his visit, Chief of the Army Staff presided over a meeting regarding security situation in Karachi which was attended by Director General (DG) Military Operations (MO), Rangers Sindh DG, Military Intelligence (MI) DG and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) DG among others.

General Sharif lauded efforts of intelligence agencies to restore peace in the province and ordered ramping the operation to achieve goals in shorter period of time.

A targeted operation, led by Pakistan Rangers was launched in 2013, mainly in Karachi to curb growing crime incidence among which were target killings by operatives of banned outfits and sleeper cells.

However, army chief s meeting today came after a burst of crimes in past couple of weeks. At least five locals were killed late October in a gun attack as two unidentified miscreants targeted a mourners  gathering in Nazimabad area.

In the following days two representatives of a religious party were shot dead in Patel Para area with another four locals killed the same day within 30 minutes in different areas.

General Sharif s visit has come in a day after two criminals were nabbed by Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in Liaquatabad area who were said by the Chief Minister (CM) of Sindh to be involved in high-profile killings among 28 attacks.
