Summary Participants of session had to take oath that they will not disclose names of ECP members to media
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Members of the joint Opposition were unable to reach consensus over the names of probable Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) members in a session held on Wednesday. Final verdict regarding the finalising of the names of ECP members was left for the leaders of the respective political parties to make, reported Dunya News.
Meeting of the joint Opposition parties was presided by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Syed Khurshid Shah but the participants of the meeting were unable to reach consensus over the names of probable ECP members.
The meeting was attended by representatives belonging to various political parties, including Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Jamaat Islami (JI), Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and Awami Muslim League (AML). Participants had to take oath that they shall not disclose names of probable candidates to the media.
Opposition members stated that appointment of unbiased members of ECP was crucial. While addressing to the media, after the meeting, members of the Opposition parties stated that the appointment of independent members was necessary in order to ensure free and fair elections as the country could not bear further controversial elections.
Meeting of the joint Opposition to look upon the issue of the formation of the Terms of Reference (TORs) catering the investigation of the Panama Leaks issue will be held on July 19 as Opposition members shall overview the options left for them.
