More than 15 lac Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan for 36 years

Summary Federal Government will try to use services of UNHCR, to send the refugees back to Afghanistan.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Millions of Afghan nationals who arrived in Pakistan for shelter during Soviet war in 1980 could not return to their country, reported on Monday.

According to United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the number of Afghanis living in Pakistan for 36 years is more than 15 lac.

Government officials said that the refugees are burden on the local resources of food, water and electricity and also creating difficulties at Torkham border with their transportation. 

However, the residents said that they have been living in Pakistan for so many years and have permanently settled their businesses and houses here. They said that they have whole heartly accepted Pakistan as their own country.

Federal government has decided to use the services and facilities made available by the international community through the UNHCR, to send the refugees back to Afghanistan. 

On the other hand, the local traders in Peshawar staged protest against the the last week’s unprovoked firing by Afghan forces at Torkham border.

The protesters also alleged that Afghan refugees have not only disturbed economy but they are also involved in various crimes including terrorism.

They demanded the government to make immediate arrangements for refugees’ return to Afghanistan.
