LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab s government school teachers Saturday took to the streets and staged a protest at the Charing Cross located at Mall Road. The teachers protested against the government s privatisation of public schools but successful negotiations ensured that the demonstrating teachers dispersed after the government agree to meet their demands.

The demonstration continued long into the night as the teachers refused to budge from their demands even after 32 hours since the protest started. The protest caused severe traffic jam in the area causing extreme distress to the citizens.

Reasons behind the protests include delay in upgradation of school teachers, shift in the Center of Excellence, transfer to public schools to Danish authority and Punjab Education Foundation and punishments over poor examination results. Female teachers were also seen amongst the demonstrators, protesting against the government’s move.

The demonstrators stated that the scope of their protest will increase if their demands are not met. However, on the orders of Provincial Education Minister Rana Mashood, Additional Secretary Education Mohammad Akhtar held successful negotiations with the heads of the Teacher s union as the government accepted the demands of the protesting teachers, many of whom were not locals, began to head back to their homes. Mall Road was finally cleared for traffic after 32 hours.

The protest resulted in the locals facing extreme traffic jam at Mall Road and the nearby areas. The car of a groom was also seen stranded in the traffic jam last night.

Meanwhile workers of the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) workers also protested in the city upon the decision that their daily attendance will be checked online through the electric cuffs that they will be wearing in their hands.
