US hands over smuggled Buddhist sculpture to Pakistan

MANHATTAN (Dunya News) – United States (US) has shifted rare sculpture associated with Buddhism back to Pakistan after it was smuggled from Swat in 1980s, Dunya News reported Thursday.

The rare sculpture was presented at an exhibition in New York (NY) Citys Manhattan for sale.



The sculpture that costs over USD 1.1 million was handed over to Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, Deputy Chief of Mission in a ceremony that was organised at District Attorney General Office.

Buddha’s stolen figure was first taken to Japan and then to the United States. Different cases regarding smuggling of unique items from different parts of Pakistan had surfaced in the past.
