KARACHI (Dunya News) – Student of a private university, Abdul Basit self-immolated yesterday after he was disallowed appearance in exam due to late arrival, Dunya News reported Tuesday.

Basit was denied permission to attempt annual Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) examination as he had appeared late at the centre.

The dejected student was shifted to the Civil Hospital where he succumbed to the burns while under treatment. Funeral prayer of the gone was offered after Zuhr prayer today in PECHS society.

The bereaved family has registered a case in Taimuria Police Station against Karachi Medical and Dental College and a private university.

Reportedly, Dr Ishratul Ibad, Sindh Governor has sought explanation from the university over final year students death.

According to the family, Basits car had broken down on his way to the exam centre. Late students friends have held a teacher responsible for the incident as he allegedly told Basit  he would get permission if he sets himself on fire.  

On the other hand, police have recorded statements of the administration members. The statements suggest that the late student was continuously failing for the past seven years.

Principal of the institution stated that Basit had arrived at least half an hour late for the exam. 

However, the police have said that it is too soon to say whether it was a suicide or he was set on fire.
