NEW DELHI (Dunya News / AFP) – Kashmiri veteran Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Thursday reached Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi to meet Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit.

According to Indian media, a host of issues including Kashmir will be discussed during the meeting.

Abdul Basit has also invited other Hurriyat leaders in the meeting.

A day before, a ceremony was held in Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi in relevance to Pakistan Day and was attended by several Hurriyat leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan by a heavily militarised Line of Control or LoC since the two countries won independence from Britain in 1947.

Both claim the Himalayan territory in its entirety.

Several groups have for decades been fighting Indian forces deployed in the disputed region, for independence or a merger of the territory with Pakistan.

The fighting has left tens of thousands dead, mostly civilians.

Violence in the territory has sharply declined during the last decade, but armed encounters between rebels and government forces occur regularly.
