Summary PM Nawaz said both Saudi Arabia and Iran praised Pakistan’s efforts to mediate
TEHRAN (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday met the top leadership of Iran in a bid to reduce the ongoing tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia and decided to appoint focal persons to further the peace process, Dunya News reported.
Talking to the media after the meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, PM Nawaz said both Iran and Saudi Arabia have praised Pakistan’s efforts to mediate. He said Pakistan isn’t doing this as a favour but as a duty to the Muslim world.
The Prime Minister said the peace process between the two brother Islamic countries is the top priority of Pakistan.
He said Saudi Arabia would also be requested to appoint a focal person to be involved in the dialogue process.
Earlier, PM Nawaz and General Raheel Sharif met the Iranian Defence Minister in Tehran for their reconciliation mission to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
During the meeting the Iranian Defence Minister said that Pakistan’s role for Muslim unity and PM Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Iran is very important. He said that he expects Nawaz’s meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will be fruitful.

On this occasion Sharif said that Muslim Ummah’s unity is the need of the hour and that Pakistan is ready to play its role to ease the tensions between brotherly Muslim countries.
Regional security issues of mutual interests were discussed in the meeting. On this occasion General Raheel said that brotherly country Iran is of vital importance and that Pakistani people have respect and affection for their neighbour Iran.
Earlier during the flight towards Iran the PM discussed in detail with the officials including COAS on issues regarding Pak-Iran relations. Meetings with Saudi Arabian officials were also discussed. The Prime Minister and the COAS also had a one-on-one meeting during the flight.
Earlier in Saudi Arabia, PM Nawaz Sharif and COAS General Raheel Shrif also met Saudi King Shah Salman and Saudi Defence Minister to discuss the peaceful solution of the tensions.
