ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Pakistan has noted, with deep concern, the reports about the nuclear test conducted by North Korea on 6 January 2016, the Foreign Office reported.

The FO said: "We have consistently supported a nuclear weapons free Korean Peninsula as agreed by all parties. Pakistan strongly believes that all countries should comply with their respective international obligations."

"We oppose any action which is detrimental to peace and stability in the region and militates against the prospects of reaching a solution to the issue in the framework of the Six Party Talks," it added.

On January 6, North Korea announced that it has conducted a hydrogen bomb test. The surprise announcement that complicates already difficult efforts to curb the country’s push for a working nuclear arsenal.

The North said in a broadcast that the test was successful. A hydrogen bomb is generally more powerful than a nuclear bomb.

North Korea has long pushed for an arsenal of warheads that can be mounted on a missile capable of reaching mainland America’s shores. North Korea is thought to have a handful of rudimentary nuclear bombs. But it is not yet thought to have succeeded.

South Korean officials earlier detected an "artificial earthquake" near North Korea’s main nuclear test site.

On Wednesday, the UN Security Council agreed to roll out new measures to punish North Korea after its shock announcement of a hydrogen bomb test triggered global concern and condemnation.
