LAHORE (Web Desk) – January 7, 2016 marks 40th death anniversary of Syed Mohammad Jafari, a notable poet and educationist.

Jafari was born to a well educated family in India’s Bharatpur in December 1905. Syed Mohammad Ali Jafari, his father was a well-known mentor who served as principal of Islamia College Lahore, the then called DAV School.

As the times were, Jafari spent early years of his life studying at home until later when he would earn his masters in English Literature from Government College Lahore.

After completing his matriculation in 1922, Jafari joined a BS (Hons) programme in the Government College where he went on to do MA in literature.

Opting for a career that ran in the flood, Jafari stated picking up jobs in teaching and over the course of his lectureship, he taught at different government schools in Lahore, Lyallpur and Jehlum.

English literature alone could not match his love for classical pieces, the reason why he also studied Persian and got an MA from Oriental College.

In 1940, Jafari joined the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the Press Information Department in Indian capital, New Delhi.

Jafari was known for his quirky expression on simple happenings around him. The poet wrote numerous pieces most of which were humorous and highly entertaining. 

Jafari retired from government service in 1966 and took up a residence in Karachi where he spent his last days.
