Prime Minister, others congratulate Ayaz Sadiq over re-election as NA Speaker

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif among different political parties on Monday have congratulated Ayaz Sadiq for his re-election as National Assembly (NA) Speaker with 268 votes.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf s (PTI) losing candidate Shafqat Mehmood said that people s trust in the system is crucial for democracy. He expressed these views while addressing the Parliament session after Sadiq was declared winner in the Speaker’s election.

Mehmood said that it is hoped that Sadiq would use the given authority for welfare of the people. He said that everyone talks about democracy and wants to strengthen it but until people do not trust the election system, nothing is going to happen. He said that the people do not trust the electoral process and the system needs to reclaim people’s trust.

Mehmood said that be it local body (LB) or General Elections, the system  must be made free and fair. He hopes that every member of the Parliament would work for the cause, he added.

In a message, Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has congratulated Ayaz Sadiq on becoming Speaker of the National Assembly.

He applauded the role of Ayaz Sadiq in upholding democratic traditions in the parliament. The Prime Minister stated that Ayaz Sadiq will maintain those standards in coming years.

Opposition Leader in the NA Khursheed Shah said that Ayaz Sadiq’s return on the Speaker’s seat is victory of democracy. He said that system’s success and strengthening of institutions should be the ultimate aims are two ultimate aims goals on any government.

He lauded Sadiq’s efforts as Speaker in the last two years before he was de-seated. He hoped that Sadiq would continue his work with utmost sincerity like before.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Dr Farooq Sattar, after returning to seat after as many as 85 days said that the party finds Sadiq’s matter quite similar to MQM’s resignations. He said that the day he came back to the Parliament was the day when MQM returned.

He found it worthy of mentioning that Sadiq retained the Speaker’s seat on the 138th birthday anniversary of national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal. He said that it is an honour for Sadiq that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) recommendation was not opposed.

Sattar also lauded Shafqat Mehmood for taking the defeat on his chin and keeping the democratic values intact. He also mentioned Rashid Godil who was attacked in Karachi and battled for his life for a long time in his speech. The MQM representative said that Godil was given a second life.

However, Sattar said that Pakistan is yet to go a long way to turn Iqbal’s dreams into reality. He said that supremacy of the law and the Constitution of Pakistan would strengthen the country.

He talked about alleged victimization of Pakistan’s fourth largest party, MQM. He said that is was extremely tragic that leader of such a big political party lost connect with his followers after Lahore High Court’s (LHC) ban on speeches and display of pictures.
