Summary Firing incident was a result of old standing animosity say Police sources
GUJRAT (Dunya News) – Candidate for Chairman Union Council number 9 and Pakistan Muslim League Quaid’s (PML-Q) local leader Mirza Muhammad Sharif’s son was killed on Friday as his convoy came under fire from unknown assailants. The candidate’s convoy was returning to Hazara Mughlan from Karianwala Tehsil during his election campaign when his cavalcade was caught off-guard and hit by a barrage of bullets which killed one of his sons Imran on the spot and left the other, Younas, severely injured while Sharif remained unscathed in the attack. Sharif is contesting in Gujrat’s local body elections on a ticket from PML-Q.
Younas was shifted to Aziz Bhatti Hospital where his condition is said to be critical. According to the police the firing incident was a result of old standing animosity between the unidentified attackers and Sharif.
In a statement issued earlier this year, PML-Q’s leader Chaudhary Shujat Hussain had said that PML-Q plans to contest the local polls with full force.
Election campaigns for local polls in Sindh and Punjab started after the Supreme Court in August ordered governments of both provinces to hold the elections after which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) approved the schedule for the municipal elections. ECP stated that the polls will take place in 3 phases in both provinces. The date for the first phase of the elections was October 31st which was then changed to October 12th.
